Component Descriptions
The system logic boards contain the system board, CPU card, and memory card. The
microprocessor and associated circuitry make the computer functionally equivalent to the
IBM Personal Computer AT with the following improvements:
- SL Enhanced Intel® 486DX4 microprocessor
- 75 MHz microprocessor speed
- Power management
- VGA (640x480 resolution)
- External diskette drive connector
- EIA-232D serial port
- Bidirectional parallel port
- IC Card connector
- IC DRAM Card connector
Microprocessor
The microprocessor interprets and carries out instructions. The SL Enhanced Intel® 486DX4
microprocessor is a 32-bit processor and operates in real-address mode and virtual-address (protected) mode.
RT / CMOS RAM and Battery
The real-time complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (RT/CMOS) RAM provides 128 bytes of storage.
The real-time clock uses 14 bytes of this storage to track the date, time, and battery level.
The remaining 114 bytes are assigned to store system configuration and security information.
The stored data in the RT / CMOS RAM is kept active by the backup battery when the system power is not on.
If the stored data is lost due to a depleted backup battery, start the Utility Program's Setup Menu
EPROM BIOS
The 256 KB of erasable programmable read-only memory (EPROM) contains the power-on self-test (POST).
Easy Set-up and BIOS. The routines for performing the diagnostics tests are also contained in the EPROM.
Power Management System
The power management system controls the power applied to the computer by using the setup Program's Power Save menu.
This system reduces the power drain on the battery when the computer power is on, but not actively being used.
Suspend and Resume Modes:
The suspend and resume modes are unique methods to minimize the use of power from the battery. When the computer enters suspend
mode, one beep sounds and the Power-ON indicator glows blinking orange. All tasks are stopped
and their present states are stored in memory to save power.
When the computer returns to resume mode, the computer restores the same states as when it entered suspend mode. One beep sounds and the indicator glows on steady
green when the resume operation is completed.
- The system enters suspend mode when:
A battery-low condition is detected
The Suspend button is activated
When the computer is not actively used (Auto suspend)
- The system returns to resume mode when the Resume/Power switch is switched on.
LCD
The LCD supports a maximum of 640 by 480 pels in text and graphic mode. The LCD can display 16 shades of gray at one time.
The LCD control logic provides the LCD support functions which include bias voltage, backlight (brightness) control, and contrast control.
Digitizer Control
The digitizer control provides processing of digitizer data and communications support to the microprocessor.
The controller supports detecting the movement of the electro magnetic pen . The click signal of the pen is also included in the data for further
software processing.
ThinkPad File (TPF) Card
The TPF card is functionally equivalent to a hard-disk drive. However, the TPF card utilizes flash-memory for data storage. The TPF is rugged, noiseless, and uses very little power.
IC Card Controller
The IC Card controller is integrated on the system board and can accommodate three cards at the same time. The slots conform to the PCMCIA Type 2 and JEIDA V4.1.
Diskette Drive Controller
The controller connects to the diskette drive through one 26-pin cable connector on the port replicator.
Signals and voltages are supplied through the connector to the drive. These signals and voltages can operate the computer's 3.5-inch external diskette drive.
Serial Port
The serial port is fully programmable and supports asynchronous communications. The 9-pin, D-shell connector on the port replicator provides the signals to drive a standard EIA-232D device and is assignet a port number
by using setup screen.
Parallel Port
The parallel port allows the attachment of devices that accept eight bits of parallel data at standard transistor-transistor logic (TTL) levels.
The port can be used as a general input and output port for any device or application that matches
its input and output capabilities, it has a 25-pin, D-shell connector on the port replicator and is designed primarily for printers.
IBM PS/2 Enhanced Keyboard connector
The keyboard connector is located on the front of the port replicator and accepts a PS/2 Enhanced keyboard.
External CRT connector
The CRT connector on the port replicator is used to connect an external CRT.
