Installing Software for the
Windows 95 OEM Service Release
If the Windows Recovery CD was supplied with the computer, see the
Guide for the Recovery CD instead of using this information.
Checking the Version of Windows 95 Installed on the Computer
To check the version of Windows 95 installed on the computer, do the following.
- Start the computer
- Open the My Computer folder on the Windows 95 desktop.
- Open Control Panel in the My Computer folder.
- Open System
- Check the version number of Windows 95 on the General tab in System Properties:
System:
Microsoft Windows 95
4.00.xxx x
if the version is 4.00.950 B (Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2) or later, use this information
contained in this section. Otherwise, see the ThinkPad Users Guide instead, for installing software for
Windows 95.
Creating Windows 95 Setup Disks
Create the Windows 95 setup disks for backup if you have not created them already:
- Open the Start menu on the Windows 95 desktop.
- Select Programs
- Select Accessories
- Select System Tools
- Select Create System Disks
- Follow the instructions
Installing Microsoft Windows 95
To install Windows 95, see Installing Microsoft Windows 95 in the ThinkPad users Guide.
Installing the ThinkPad Display Driver for Windows 95
To install the ThinkPad display driver for Windows 95, do the following:
- Open My Computer
- Open Control Panel
- Open Display
- Click on the Settings tab
- Click on the Advanced Properties button
- Click on the Change... button on the Adapter tab
- Click on Have Disk
- Insert the ThinkPad Video Feature Diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive.
- Make sure the path is set to A:\ and click OK
- Make sure that either IBM ThinkPad (Cyber9385/82) PCI or
IBM ThinkPad (Cyber9320) PCI, depending on the computer model,
is displayed in the selection.
- Click on OK
- Click on the Monitor tab
- Click on Change
- Check the display for all devices
- Click on Laptop Display Panel (800x600)
- Click on OK
- Click on Close
- Click on OK to adjust the refresh rate
- Click on OK in the confirmation dialog
- Select color palette, desktop area, and font size parameters for the screen
- Click on Close
- Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows 95 prompts you to restart Windows 95
to make the display driver change effective.
The ThinkPad display driver installation is now complete.
Installing the ThinkPad Features Program for Windows 95
To install the ThinkPad Features Program for Windows 95, do the following:
- Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette for Windows 3.1/Windows 95 , or the
ThinkPad Utility Diskette 1 into the diskette drive.
- Click on Start
- Click on Run...
- Type a:installw
- Click on OK
- Follow the instructions on the screen.
Have ready the Utility Diskette for DOS, Personalization diskette.
(When you finish creating the personal data, you must save it on this diskette. The
Utility Diskette for Windows 3.1/Windows 95 does not contain the function available on this
diskette, such as the ability to store the personalization data into the computers nonvolatile memory.)
When you select Install Personalization Editor on the Installation Options memu, you are prompted to insert this diskette.
The installation of the ThinkPad Features Program is complete.
Installing the PCI-Bus Master Driver for Windows 95
The PCI-Bus Master Driver is automatically installed when you install Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2.
NOTE: Do not install the PCI-Bus Master Driver from the ThinkPad Utility Diskette.
Installing PCMCIA Support for Windows 95
To install PCMCIA support for Windows 95, do the following:
- Open My Computer
- Open Control Panel
- Open System
- Click on the Device Manager tab
- Double-click on either PCIC or compatible PCMCIA controller or
Cirrus Logic PCIC compatible PCI to PCMCIA bridge, depending on the computer model.
- Click on the Driver tab
- Click on the Update Driver button
- Insert the PCMCIA Installation Diskette for OS/2, Windows 95 into the diskette drive
- On the Update Device Driver Wizard panel, select Yes to the question Do you want Windows to search for the driver?
- Click on the Next> button
- Click on the Finish button. Copying File requests one of the Windows 95 installation
diskettes on the CD ROM.
- Change the source for Copying files from: to A:\ when windows tries to copy
IBMCSS01.VXD or IBMPCDIF.VXD
- Click on OK. The installation begins
- Restart the computer
The ThinkPad PCMCIA device driver installation is complete.
Installing AudioDrive Support Software for Windows 95
During its installation, Windows 95 detects the AudioDrive device in some
computers and automatically installs its support software. However, this is not the case with the AudioDrive devices in
ThinkPad computers. AudioDrive support software must be installed separately by doing the following:
- Open My Computer
- Open Control Panel
- Open System
- Click on the Device Manager tab
- Double-click on Sound, video, and game controller from the list.
- Double-click on ESS AudioDrive
- Click on the Driver tab
- Click on the Update Driver... button
- Insert the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive
- Select Yes to the question Do you want Windows to Search for the driver? on
the Update Device Driver Wizard panel
- Click on the Next> button
- Click on the Finish button. Copying File requests one of the Windows 95 installation
diskettes on the CD ROM.
- Insert the diskette labeled Install Disk1
- Click on OK
- Change the source for Copying files from: to A:\
- Click on OK. The installation begins
- Restart the computer
The ThinkPad AudioDrive support software for Windows 95 is complete.
Installing the Infrared Device Driver for Windows 95
To install the infrared device driver for Windows 95, see Installing the Infrared Device Driver for Windows 95 in the
Thinkpad users guide.
In the users guide, the device name in Device Manager is indicated as either Generic IrDA Compatible Device or Generic
IR Serial Port depending on the version of Windows 95 installed on the computer.
NOTE: The infrared device may be disabled by the default system setting. In this case, you must first enable
the infrared device before using it. Also make sure that there is no resource conflict after enabling the infrared device.
If you are going to install FAT32 using the installation procedure in the ThinkPad users guide, do the following:
- Insert the ThinkPad IR Features Diskette in drive A:
- Open the MSDOS command prompt
- Change to the Windows directory
- Type: Copy A:IBM*.*
- Type: EDIT SYSTEM.INI
- Locate 386Enh in the file
- Add the following line after 386Enh:
device=ibmir.386
Make sure that there is no duplicate line
- Save and then exit
