IDE Data Cable Connections

In a typical IDE PC, the single IDE cable can support one or two hard drives (or a hard drive and a CD-ROM). If in the computer is currently only one hard drive installed, then plug the second connector of the computer IDE data cable into the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM.

If the computer has an IDE cable with only one connector, remove the cable and use the one provided with the IDE CD-ROM, which has two connectors for two drives.

In some computers, there are multiple IDE connectors on the system board. The combination of the two IDE ports allow up to four storage devices to be connected via IDE (primary port with master and slave devices, secondary port with master and slave devices). In this case, use the IDE data cable provided with the IDE CD-ROM drive and connect the CD-ROM drive to the secondary IDE port. The CD-ROM drive should be set as master (default).

If the computer has two CD-ROM drives, both should be put on the secondary port (one as master, one as slave). If there are three CD-ROM drives, one can go on the primary port as slave and the other two on the secondary port (master/slave).

Another possibility is that the computer might not have enough IDE ports to add another drive. In such a case, there should be installed an adapter that plugs into the system bus to provide more IDE data ports. (Some Soundblaster adapter have the possibility to connect a IDE 2X CD-ROM).

System Configuration Setting

On personal computers manufactured before 1994, the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM Drive will not be recognized by the system BIOS and configuration code. This is not a problem, because the drive will be run by a device driver. However the standard self-checking that systems do during power-on time will not include the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM Drive.

Special note about the PS/VP 6472, 6482, 6484, 6492 and 6494 systems:
These PS/VP systems provide a dual-port, high performance IDE controller. The IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM drive can be connected to either port of the system. However, the system configuration code is not designed to recognize the IDE CD-ROM type drives. Therefore, you must manually select a special mode (not the default) to run the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM drive in these systems. This selection can be made through the system configuration utility:

  1.  Select the system configuration utility
  2.  Scroll down to the section 'Mass Storage Devices'
  3.  Within that section are two entries, 'Primary IDE Mode' and 'Secondary IDE Mode'  These entries allow to set the performance mode of each IDE port.
  4.  The mode should be set to 'compatible' for the port on which you placed the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM  (connect/define the CD-ROM to the secondary IDE port for best performance)
  5.  Save the changes and exit configuration utility.

Installing the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM for DOS / Windows
(DOS Version 3.3 or later)
  1.  Insert the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM Option/Device Driver Diskette into the diskette drive.
  2.  Type A:UINSTALL after the prompt and press Enter  (follow the instructions on screen)

Installing the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM for OS/2
(2X CD-ROM OS/2 V-2.0 or later / 4X CD-ROM OS/2 V-2.1 or later / please see the READ.ME file on Diskette)
  1.  Insert the IDE 2X or 4X CD-ROM Option/Device Driver Diskette into the diskette drive.
  2.  Select OS/2 System
  3.  Select System Setup
  4.  Select Device Driver Install
  5.  At the OS/2 Device Driver Installation screen, verify source and destination and click Install
  6.  At the Select Device Drivers screen select OS/2 2.0 IDE CD-ROM Device Support and click OK
  7.  Click Exit

OS/2 2.0
(You will need the OS/2 source diskettes to perform the following steps)
  1.  From the OS/2 desktop, select the OS/2 System folder.

  15.  At the OS/2 Device Driver Installation screen, click Exit and follow the instructions on the screen.

Emergency Eject

If the Tray will not eject autom., then turn off the computer. Insert a small, flat blade screwdriver into the emergency eject hole, then rotate the mechanism counterclockwise. This will slowly eject the tray.

Playing an Audio CD (DOS - OS/2)

At the operating system prompt, type IBMCDPLY and press Enter.

OS/2
Select either OS/2 Window or OS/2 Full Screen
At the operating system prompt, type PLAYCD and press Enter.

Solving Problems

Diagnostics
A general purpose diagnostic has been provided on the IDE CD-ROM Option / Device Driver diskette. The diagnostic is self documented and can only be run from DOS (not virtual DOS on OS/2 or DOS under Microsoft Windows).
To start the diagnostics go to the DOS prompt and select the A: drive while the IDE CD-ROM Option / Device Driver diskette is loaded in your diskette drive and type CDFT and press Enter.
