2.0 Chapter 2. Using the Installation Aid
You can select and install LAN Support Program NDIS (LSP NDIS) drivers
and the NDIS MAC driver and view and change the parameters for all the
drivers using the Installation Aid. The Installation Aid configures and
installs the program by copying files to the working copy (1) and editing
CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and PROTOCOL.INI. When a credit card adapter is
to be used, an additional installation step may be required. Please see
the Installation and Testing Instructions for your adapter for more
information.
If the working copy already has a CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, or
PROTOCOL.INI file, the Installation Aid saves it by copying it and giving
it a numerical file extension (for example, CONFIG.001).
(1) A working copy is a copy of the program that has been
configured for use in a particular computer. The working
copy can be installed on a diskette or on a hard disk.
2.1 Overview of the Installation Aid
The Installation Aid selects default LSP NDIS drivers for each installed
NDIS adapter and provides default values for the parameters associated
with those drivers. Depending upon your environment, you may need to
update the default driver selections or change the parameters.
You can use the Installation Aid to view the description of a parameter by
following these steps:
1. Proceed to the configuration panel that displays the adapter drivers
to be installed.
2. Use the arrow keys to place the cursor on the field for the adapter
driver and press F5.
3. On the next panel, for changing parameters, place the cursor on the
value of the parameter and press F1 (Help).

NDIS' for more information about the LSP NDIS driver parameters and refer
to the Installation and Testing Instructions for your adapter for more
information about the NDIS MAC driver parameters.
The Installation Aid has a panel that instructs you to insert a driver
diskette, which is a diskette that contains adapter drivers. This
diskette is the diskette that contains LSP NDIS. See the Installation and
Testing Instructions for your adapter for more information about the
adapter drivers.
2.1.1 Information Flow of the Installation Aid Panels
This is the information flow of the Installation Aid panels:
1. General information panels that describe the program.
2. A setup panel that requests information about the configuration, such
as whether you have driver diskettes.
3. Panels that request diskettes for input.
4. A configuration panel that displays the adapter drivers to be
installed and enables you to install them.
5. A panel that allows you to change the adapter drivers to be installed.
6. A panel that allows you to view or change parameters.
7. A completion panel that informs you that the installation is complete
and tells you how to activate the program.
Help panels and message panels guide you as you complete the installation.
If an error occurs, an error message is displayed.
2.1.2 Choosing the LSP NDIS Drivers to Provide IEEE 802.2 and NetBIOS Support
You can choose among the LSP NDIS drivers to obtain IEEE 802.2 and NetBIOS
support. See Figure 2-1.

NOTES:
1. The default configuration DXME0MOD.SYS with DXMT0MOD.SYS requires less
memory but has slower performance than DXME0MOD.SYS with DXMJ0MOD.SYS.
2. DXME0MOD.SYS and DXMJ0MOD.SYS are protocol drivers; one or both of
them must be included in the configuration.
3. If your application programs require the IEEE 802.2 interface, such as
IBM Personal Communications/3270 or IBM Application System/400(*) PC
Support, you must include DXME0MOD.SYS.
4. If your application programs require only the NetBIOS interface, it is
recommended that you replace the default LSP NDIS drivers DXME0MOD.SYS
and DXMT0MOD.SYS with the single driver DXMJ0MOD.SYS. This selection
may improve performance.
5. DXMJ0MOD.SYS and DXMT0MOD.SYS cannot be used in the same configuration
because each of them provides the NetBIOS interface.
6. If NetBIOS support provided by DXMT0MOD.SYS is selected for one
adapter in a two-adapter configuration, support is provided for both
adapters.
2.2 Using the Installation Aid
To use the Installation Aid, you must prepare your computer for
installation, make a backup copy of the diskette that contains the LSP
NDIS files, and run the Installation Aid.
2.2.1 Preparing the Computer
° If you will be starting the computer from a hard disk, make sure that
DOS 3.3 or higher has been installed on the hard disk. Use the DOS
VER command to check the DOS level. If you must reformat your hard
disk, be sure to back up your files. See the IBM Personal Computer
Disk Operating System user's guide for your version of DOS for
instructions.
° If you will be starting the computer from a diskette (instead of a
hard disk), be sure that you have a formatted diskette for use as the
working copy. It must be formatted as a DOS 3.3 or higher system
diskette. Use the DOS FORMAT command with the /S option to format it,
if it is not already formatted.
2.2.2 Making a Backup Copy
Before running the Installation Aid, make a backup copy of the diskette
that contains the LSP NDIS files using the DOS DISKCOPY command, or copy
the contents of the diskette to the hard disk. If you copy the files to a
hard disk, maintain the directory structure found on the source diskette.
When running the Installation Aid, use the backup copy and keep the
original in a safe place.
2.2.3 Installing LSP NDIS with the Installation Aid
1. Perform one of the following steps:
a. If you plan to run the Installation Aid from a diskette, insert
the backup copy of the LSP NDIS diskette into the diskette drive.
Make the diskette drive the current drive and make the directory
in which LSP NDIS is located the current directory. In most
cases, LSP NDIS will be found in the root directory.
b. If you plan to run the Installation Aid from a hard disk, set the
hard disk as the current drive and make the directory in which the
LSP NDIS files are located the current directory. If you plan to
install the working copy of LSP NDIS on the same hard disk, be
sure you give the target directory a different name from the
source directory.
2. Type:
DXMAID
and press Enter.
3. Select the responses and type in the requested information on the
Installation Aid panels.
Important: Since the LSP NDIS drivers and the NDIS MAC driver with
its associated files are both located on the LSP NDIS diskette, the
LSP NDIS diskette is also the driver diskette. Accept the default
answer Yes to the question Do you have driver diskettes?; then, leave
the backup copy of the LSP NDIS diskette in the drive and press Enter
when the Installation Aid prompts you to insert the driver diskette.
4. If you need more information about a panel, press F1 for help. You
can press F1 from a help panel for another layer of help.
5. If you need to change any drivers or view or change parameters, from
the configuration panel that shows the adapter drivers to be
installed, use the arrow keys to move between fields. If needed, you
can use the arrow keys to move between the primary and alternate
adapter fields. When the cursor is placed on the name of the driver,
press F6 to change the driver or press F5 to view or change the
parameters.
6. When the installation is complete, the Installation Aid returns you to
DOS. LSP NDIS has been copied to your target disk. This is now your
working copy. You will not need the original or backup copy of the
LSP NDIS diskette for everyday operation. You will need this diskette
only if you want to change your configuration later or if your working
copy is damaged.
New CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and PROTOCOL.INI files have been created
on the working copy with the commands to load the appropriate drivers
when the computer is started. If you configured the program for the
first time and did not alter any parameters, default values are
assumed.
If you already had a CONFIG.SYS, an AUTOEXEC.BAT, or a PROTOCOL.INI
file on the working copy, the Installation Aid has updated it, but has
saved a copy of the previous file with the same file name and a unique
numeric extension.
7. If you load LSP NDIS from a diskette, insert the working copy into the
diskette drive. If you load LSP NDIS from a hard disk, make sure the
diskette drives are empty. To activate the program, press and hold
Ctrl and Alt; then, press Del. Release all keys. A copyright
statement will be displayed. Look for messages. If there are no
messages or if there are only information messages, the LSP NDIS is
correctly loaded.
If any error messages are displayed, LSP NDIS may not be correctly
installed; see Appendix A, "Messages." For additional help, see
Chapter 6, "Recommendations and Problem Solving."
If no LSP NDIS copyright statement is displayed, LSP NDIS is not
installed or has been removed. In this case, make a new backup copy
of LSP NDIS and reinstall it.
2.2.4 Reconfiguring with LSP NDIS
One of the options on the setup panel on the Installation Aid is to
update an existing configuration. To reconfigure, answer Yes to this
question. Be sure that you specify the target drive and directory
correctly, because the target drive and directory identify the working
copy.
Statements in CONFIG.SYS that load drivers that are not included in the
new configuration are normally removed, but in one case a statement is
left in CONFIG.SYS. If you replace one NDIS adapter with another NDIS
adapter and the Installation Aid does not find a network information file
(NIF) for the original adapter, it places REMs in the CONFIG.SYS file.
Check CONFIG.SYS for these REMs. They may indicate statements that you
need to remove, such as the NDIS MAC driver line for the original adapter.
The Installation Aid preserves existing driver parameters where
appropriate. When converting from a configuration containing DXMT0MOD.SYS
to a configuration containing DXMJ0MOD.SYS and when converting from a
configuration containing DXMJ0MOD.SYS to a configuration containing
DXMT0MOD.SYS, the parameters of the earlier configuration are preserved to
the extent possible.
The LSP NDIS Installation Aid can be used to update a working copy that
was made from a stand-alone version of the LAN Support Program.
2.2.5 Removing the LAN Support Program Configuration
To remove LSP NDIS, run the Installation Aid and deselect the adapter
driver for both the primary and alternate adapter. The files will not be
erased; instead, all entries in the CONFIG.SYS file that load LSP NDIS
will be removed. The following steps explain the removal process:
1. Make sure that your current drive and directory contain the working
copy of the LAN Support Program NDIS. Type:
DXMAID
and press Enter.
2. Accept the default response (Yes) to the question whether to update an
existing configuration. From the panel that displays the adapter
drivers to be installed, press F6 to change the adapter driver. At
the panel that enables you to select the adapter drivers, press the
space bar to deselect the adapter driver; then, press F4 to save your
selections. You are returned to the panel that displays the adapter
drivers. No adapter driver or protocol driver should be displayed for
the primary adapter.
If you have a driver to remove for the alternate adapter, use the
arrow keys to move the cursor to the ADAPTER DRIVER field for the
alternate adapter and press F6. Deselect the adapter driver for the
alternate adapter as you did for the primary adapter, and again press
F4 to save your selections.
When no adapter drivers are displayed on the panel that displays the
drivers to be installed, press F4 again to install your configuration.
Because you have deselected all the adapter drivers, the Installation
Aid removes LSP NDIS.
3. When the completion panel appears, follow its instructions to activate
the program. The Installation Aid creates backup copies of the
CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and PROTOCOL.INI files and saves them with
the same file names and unique numeric extensions. Then, it removes
all entries in the CONFIG.SYS file that load LSP NDIS.
4. If any of the following files are on the working copy, you may want to
erase them to save space.
° DXMA0MOD.SYS
° DXME0MOD.SYS
° DXMJ0MOD.SYS
° DXMT0MOD.SYS
° DXME0.NIF
° DXMJ0MOD.NIF
° DXMT0MOD.NIF
° PROTOCOL.INI
° PROTMAN.DOS
° NETBIND.COM
° DXM.MSG
° Any NDIS MAC drivers, NIFs, and associated files
After removing the LSP NDIS configuration, restart the computer and look
for load-time messages. If you get any LSP NDIS messages, the LSP NDIS
configuration was not removed.
Run the Installation Aid again and be sure that no adapter drivers are
selected, so that no adapter drivers will be loaded.
