Abstract: SERVER INSTABILITY, HANGS, UNABLE TO INSTALL NOS

SYMPTOM:

Symptoms include but not limited to the following:

1.  Not being able to install NOS
2.  Errors while installing NOS
3.  Errors while doing heavy I/O
4.  System hangs during heavy I/O

PROBLEM ISOLATION AIDS:

•  The system is any of the following IBM servers:

          a Netfinity 7000-M10 server, Type 8680, any Model.
          a Netfinity 7000 server, Type 8651, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5500-M20 server, Type 8662, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5500-M10 server, Type 8661, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5500 server, Type 8660, any Model.
          a Netfinity 5000 server, Type 8659, any Model.
          a Netfinity 3500 server, Type 8644, any Model.
          a Netfinity 3000 server, Type 8476, any Model.
          a PC Server 720, Type 8642, any Model.
          a PC Server 704, Type 8650, any Model.
          a PC Server 520, Type 8641, any Model.
          a PC Server 330, Type 8640, any Model.
          a PC Server 325, Type 8639, any Model.
          a PC Server 320, Type 8640, any Model.
          a PC Server 315, Type 8638, any Model.
   

•  The system is configured with the following option(s):

          Onboard ServeRAID
          a PC ServeRAID SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 70G8489
          a ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter, Option P/N 76H3584
          a Netfinity ServeRAID-3H Ultra2 SCSI Adapter,
            Option P/N 01K7207
          a Netfinity ServeRAID-3L Ultra2 SCSI Adapter,
            Option P/N 01K7364
   

•  The system has a RAID-5 Logical Drive consisting of at least 10 or more physical drives.
•  The system MUST have just recently created the Logical Drive.

FIX:

Apply the following updates:

•  IBM ServeRAID BIOS and Firmware Diskette Version 3.50,
   (Microsoft Certification Pending)

•  IBM ServeRAID Device Drivers v3.50,
   (Microsoft Certification Pending)

•  IBM ServeRAID Administration and Monitoring Program
   Diskette Version 3.50, (Microsoft Certification Pending)

•  IBM ServeRAID Cluster Solution for Windows NT Diskette
   Version 3.50, (Microsoft Certification Pending)

•  IBM ServeRAID Command Line Program Diskette Version 3.50
   (Microsoft Certification Pending)

•  IBM ServeRAID Manager Windows Diskette Version 3.50,
   (Microsoft Certification Pending)

•  IBM ServeRAID Option CD Version 3.50,
   (Microsoft Certification Pending)

WORKAROUND:

This problem is only seen when the Autosynch is running on a RAID-5 Logical Drive with 10 or more physical drives.
The workaround is to wait until the Autosynch is finished before proceeding.
